Cascade
What if an answer could be passed on?
An installation in development, exploring the material resources behind AI—and the choice to inherit knowledge that someone else has already generated.

Behind
an answer
A digital answer arrives as words on a screen. The computation, electricity and cooling behind it usually remain elsewhere, outside the encounter. Cascade brings that distance into view through the image and sound of a waterfall.
The proposed installation places a large waterfall and basin beside a simple choice: accept a relevant answer that another participant has chosen to share, or ask an AI to generate a new one. Water and sound give that choice a spatial presence.
An answer
held in common
If someone has already spent resources asking a question, what would it mean for their answer to become something others can inherit? The work treats reuse as a visible social choice. A shared answer carries a history: when it was generated, where it came from and how it has been used.
The archive is conceived as a collection of contributions that participants explicitly choose to donate. A visitor can consider a suggested answer, decline it and generate another. The question extends beyond efficiency to the ownership, care and governance of shared knowledge.
The proposed
encounter
Ask a question
Speak or type a question. When a suitable, reviewed contribution is available, the installation presents it along with its origin.
Inherit or generate
Choose to use the shared answer or request a new one. Accepting an existing answer moves the water toward a clear, steady circulation; new generation briefly intensifies the flow, turbulence, mist and sound.
Choose what to pass on
After a new answer, decide whether to contribute a reviewed question and answer to the shared archive. Donation is an explicit choice.
Water as
a presence
The waterfall is conceived as the body of the work: a way to experience the consequences of an otherwise distant computational decision through movement, scale and sound. Its changing states leave the choice open, without scoring or rewarding the visitor.
The visual response is relative and artist-composed. A change in the water expresses a difference between modes of obtaining an answer; it does not stand for a universal, measured volume of water consumed or saved per question.
Making
the waterfall
Cascade is in development. The current prototype focuses on waterfall imagery in Unreal Engine: a tall composition, wet rock surfaces, falling water and a basin. The AI dialogue, shared archive and connection between visitor choices and the waterfall form the planned interaction.
The visual direction combines a composed water body with responsive spray, mist and sound. The aim is a continuous spatial presence that can change with the encounter.
Visual prototype: Unreal Engine · Niagara · Water System
Planned: Houdini water cache · AI dialogue · Shared Q&A archive
